You can try to learn on the internet.
If you have a guitar and can read notes then you can start right away.
If you cant read notes then you should probably find someone that knows how or just search it up online. I’m trying to learn how to play the guitar but i’m taking lessons. You can go on youtube and they have tutorials but some dont really help…anyways i hope i helped :)
and good luck with the guitar!

About Scott

Been playing guitar semi-professionally since I was 15 years old. Have played 1000's of live shows with many different bands in many different music genres. I am a former guitar intructor who is convinced that you will learn faster and spend less money by learning through an online or downloaded course than by taking private lessons.

i started guitar 6 months ago and i taught myself. i started out by buying a guitar book at my local guitar store that teaches you the basics. (notes, starter chords, strumming, fingering, ect.) They are only around $ 10.

I also found videos on youtube to help me. Just search beggining guitar lessons or how to play guitar.

Once you learn that you could start playing chords and getting chord sheets and lyrics off the internet. you wouldn’t believe how much stuff is on the internet of chords.

I kno how you feel I was there once. Most people starting off think that it takes a whole lot of money to learn how to play guitar, I kno I was like that once. I had a guitar for a few months but I never actually played it all I did was mess around on it, but one day I decided to make a band with my friend. So he played me what he knew on guitar and thats when I knew that I needed to get better for the band. Know I can play tons of songs. Basically what I’m trying to say is that (1: You need some kind of guitar idol (not saying my friend is my idol, my idols are James Hetfield and Zakk Wylde). (2: Apply yourself, either give yourself something to play for or get insperation. So if you really want to start off you can get lessons online like Youtube or you can go to Best Buy and their should be a little mini Guitar Center in the back somewhere and get lessons there for less than usual (just to get you going though).

I taught myself also about 25 years ago. What I did, is play with my family, I used to just sing, but I wanted to join my brother and my dad in playing. So I just got a small jr size guitar to learn on (actually it was my sons first guitar, but it had a good sound). Then as I had grown up around them and watching, I would watch their fingers. I’ll get you a site I found off the net where you can go and look at the chords, and where to put your fingers. What I did was just learn simple songs and the first two chords I learned were C and G. The simplest chords and you can play songs. Don’t worry about all the minors and stuff, they come with time. Pick out C and G and you can play a song. Learn F, C, and G7th and you can play most songs. If you learn D, E7th and A, you can play most songs. I play by ear, eventually this will come to you, but I’ve been around musicians all my life. I begin writing songs back in the 90′s and my son would put the chords and music to them. I’m into country so some are much easier to play. Get you a song book, they have easy chord song books and when you learn just those chords you will be able to play. The first song I learned to play was Jambalia by Hank Williams (also by Creedence Clearwater). Just two chords. C and G. Stumming comes with the beat and how you want to play your music, rhythm I mean. You can stoke down and down or up and down with a pick. I can’t use a pick. I use my thumb. But playing by ear will come with you, if you know your sounds and music. You’ll just know when to change chords. Now here is the site, hope this helps and you have fun. Just learn the easiest chords first. Learn C and G and the rest will follow. I hope you enjoy singing as much as I do! This is such a stress reliever, and when you want to just scream, you can play and sing and write songs, I wish you much happiness.
These are the chords I play in:
    G, D, A, and E
    Key of G = G, C and D7
    Key of D = D, G and A7
    Key of A = A, D and E7
    Key of E = E, A and B7

Just do a search on yahoo or google for the type songs you like followed by guitar chords lyrics. There are so many! Enjoy!
